Boards keep listings up after the employer has taken them down, so the employer's applicant tracking system is the only source that goes quiet when the role closes. Three things settle it, and all three live on the employer's own applicant tracking system rather than on the board you found the role on. The checker reads the same three out of JobShifu's crawl history, which is the only part you cannot see for yourself.

Whether the employer's own system still lists it
A board can keep serving its copy for weeks after the requisition came down. A missing page does not tell you whether the role was filled. Check the employer’s application route and any closing notice.

The date it was first seen there
Not the date printed on the board, which is usually the date the board last received the listing. First seen means when the service discovered it, which may be later than the employer posted it.

Whether the same requisition was listed before
A role posted, taken down and posted again is a different situation from one that went up once and stayed up, and a board shows you both as new.
The third is not a rare case. As of the August 2026 snapshot, 5.3% of 982,662 open roles across 18,835 employers had been listed, closed and listed again at least once, about one in 19. The measured relist rate, by function, seniority and country.
Asking the recruiter whether it is still open
When the posting is gone from the employer's page, or the checker has no record of it, asking is what is left. Keep it short enough to answer in one line from a phone, and send it to the recruiter named on the posting or to the address the careers page gives.
Asking whether a role is still open is a smaller request than asking about your own application, which is why it tends to get answered. It also has no downside if the answer is no.

How do I check when a job was actually posted?
Check the employer's own careers page, not the job board. The date a board prints is usually the date the board received the listing, and its copy can outlive the original. Some employer systems show the date on the posting itself: Workday, for example, says how many days ago it was posted. When the employer's page shows no date, paste the posting's URL into the checker on this page. It returns the date JobShifu first saw the posting on the employer's system, whether it is still listed there, and whether the same requisition was listed before.
How does the checker know whether a job posting is still open?
JobShifu crawls employer applicant tracking systems and career sites directly and re-sweeps every board. The checker reports the date JobShifu first saw the posting, the last time the crawl found it on the employer's page, and, if the crawl can no longer find it, the date it stopped seeing it. It does not claim to know why an employer removed a role.
Which job URLs can be checked?
Postings on Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby, SmartRecruiters, iCIMS and Workday, looked up by their posting ID. Paste the URL from the employer's own careers page. Links from LinkedIn, Indeed and other boards are not looked up, because the board's copy is not the source of truth for whether the role is open.
What does 'reposted' mean on the result?
The same employer requisition was listed before, disappeared, and was listed again. The checker shows how many times and the earlier first-seen date. It is often a slow pipeline or an evergreen listing, and it is worth applying with eyes open.
Is it a good sign if the posting was taken down after I applied?
It is not a signal either way. A posting comes down when a role is filled, when a budget is pulled, when two requisitions are merged, and when a team pauses a search, and nothing in the removal itself separates those. A close is not a hire, and it is certainly not a hire of someone else instead of you.
Early closes are also ordinary. As of the September 2026 measurement, 8% to 17% of postings were gone from the employer's board within a week of first being seen and 16% to 29% within two weeks. How long postings stay open, measured.
