The saving half matters more than it sounds. A job you found on Tuesday and meant to apply for on Saturday is frequently gone by Saturday, and even when the listing survives, the version you read is not necessarily the version still posted. Capturing it means the description you tailored against is the description you actually saw.
Do I need an account?
Yes, and it is free to create.
The extension fills forms from your profile and attaches your tailored documents. Neither of those exists without an account, so there is no meaningful signed-out mode to offer. There is also a technical reason it works this way: a script running inside a web page cannot safely hold your session, so the extension's background worker handles anything touching your account and the page itself never sees your credentials.
What permissions does it need, and why?
Filling a form requires reading the form. There is no version of this that works without page access.
On install, the extension runs on the job sites it already knows how to handle. That covers a large share of applications, because most companies use one of a handful of applicant tracking systems.
The optional all-sites permission
Running on any application form, including a one-off careers page on a company's own domain, needs a broader permission. Three things worth knowing about it:
- It is optional. The extension works without it.
- Only you can grant it, from the extension's own options page. Nothing can turn it on in the background.
- It is genuinely off until you do. The extension will tell you when it is somewhere it cannot help, rather than silently doing nothing.
That last point is stated plainly because the alternative failure mode is worse: a tool that claims broad coverage and quietly injects nothing leaves you staring at a form wondering why the panel will not fill it.
How long does saving a job take?
About a second, usually. Sometimes longer, and it tells you which.
If JobShifu has already seen that posting, the structured version is ready and saving is near-instant. If nobody has captured it before, the description has to be read and structured first, which is on the order of ten to twenty-five seconds.
When that happens the extension does not hold you hostage to it. It hands off and finishes the work in the background, so you can open the tailoring screen straight away and the job arrives while you are getting there.
How it works with the web app
Two views of one account, deliberately split by what each is good at.
The extension lives on the page you are applying from, so it handles capture and form filling. The web app is where the reading and deciding happens: tailoring, fit, the tracker, interview prep. Neither is a cut-down version of the other.
The handoff runs both ways. Save a job in the extension and it is in the web app before you switch tabs. Press "Apply on the job page" in the web app and the extension is armed for that specific posting, so when you land on the application the correct tailored resume is already selected rather than you hunting through a document list.
